Dragging my tochus...
Dec. 19th, 2005 08:05 pmThe talking faces on the morning news reports mentioned that today was expected to be the busiest day of the year for the post office, and there was something to that. It was pretty busy today. As we have only one car between me and Galina, she dropped me off at the store one hour before opening, and I spent that time processing UPS boxes, which had become stockpiled in the back room on Saturday. (I also must've heard about a dozen people remind us about how today was supposed to be a really hectic day. Thanks, neighbors!)
The idea was for me to get free during the day, after the morning rush, to take care of other stuff, but it was not to be. I was pretty much on the go all day long, went bleary-eyed from processing packages and trying too often to clarify package information that should have been captured when the order was being rung up (e.g., UPS or FedEx? proper Zip code?), and stayed through to the bitter end at 6 pm. I'm not at all sure how this will work tomorrow, but I wouldn't lay very much money against it being much different from today; perhaps just not as hectic.
Indeed, today marked the first day of Procrastinator's Hell Week, as folks who wanted to make sure packages arrived in places like Vermont and Florida had to send them via a three-day courier service (such as UPS 3-Day-Select or FedEx Express Saver). Tomorrow, destinations such as Ohio will require the same kind of service for boxes that pretty much have to get somewhere by Christmas. And onward, through the week, until Thursday looms and we'll surely get a handful of folks sending things overnight at exhorbitant rates (once your package gets too heavy or too big, your wallet really starts to feel the pinch).
Moreover, I would be willing to bet - based on past experience - that some folks will show up on Friday wanting to get stuff delivered the next day, which might be possible if the destination enjoys Saturday delivery from UPS or FedEx (USPS Express Mail won't do the job, as the way it is set up, it is a two-day service both into and out of Pagosa).
Why am I sitting here and reminiscing about a day filled with boxes and sticky labels? I need to empty my mind of such stuff! (There'll be enough more of it tomorrow!)
Cheers...
