It was a good thing that I got as far as I did yesterday, because I hit the ground running this morning, opening the store and staying there until nearly 10 am, when the need to check and send the maritime translation overcame the need to help out. In the meantime, I had checked my email and was gratified to see that my suggestion regarding the TOC had been taken, though I did have to turn down an additional 5K words for this project that would have been due on Wednesday (apparently, one of the other translators had a computer problem).

Turning down the extra work did make it possible for me to accept a "quick" two-pager, except that the longer I delayed planting myself in front of my computer, the less likely it was that I'd do any of this within stated deadlines.

As it turned out, I managed to send the main maritime document a little past the due time, and had it not been for a virtually incomprehensible (illiterate, actually) sentence in the quickie, I would not have been 10 minutes late with it, either.

Then proust's wireless connection died, and nothing I could do would prod any life back into it (I could ping the router, but not load anything into my browser, although Skype was passing data through the router like it was going out of style), so I was forced to move files from the VAIO to my desktop using a thumbdrive. I was reminded that we'd experienced the same problem with Galina's Dell yesterday (a humbling experience, because Galina is not a Computer Person™ and is not interested in hearing about workarounds, etc. - she just expects stuff to work).

So, I went to the DD-WRT wiki, where I learned of a forum for this third-part firmware, where in turn I found, after digging around for a while, some information that cast an unfavorable light on the unit's DHCP service. Once I assigned a static IP address to my VAIO, it immediately started to work; ditto for the Dell.

The rest of the afternoon was spent doing a bunch of stuff around the house, with very little time devoted to translation.

As a result, I haven't made as much progress as I would have liked to on the remaining work.

But the night, as they say, is young! (And to be frank, even if I don't translate one more word today, I think the Friday deadline is still quite viable.)

Cheers...
