Back to the same-old, same-old...
Aug. 28th, 2006 08:31 pmOne day gone, three to go. It's almost like football, at least I feel as if I've been through a scrimmage.
Money worries are at the top of the list. Among other news, the tenant who fell Yet Another Month Behind in rent will be moving out next week, and although he promises to pay all monies owed, you'll forgive me for not holding my breath in the interim. There is, apparently, a sparkling fine reason for landlords to get medieval about late rent payments, as in this endeavor, nice guys end up stuck with the bill.
I'm typing this entry from the store, where I went to try to advance the cause of quitting the space, but I can't see much progress, despite having just thrown out about 6 bags of junk. I need to actually start removing furnishings, and to do that, I'll need to first remove all the junk around and in the furnishings.
I called Drew's place, hoping he'd be back from his first day on the job as a driver for UPS, but Shannon says she expects him home around 9:30 pm. I hope that isn't the usual quitting time, as even with a start time of around 10 am, such hours make for a long day. Plus, I need some help and advice from him, not the least of which is guidance about what to do with all his paintball stuff.
Blyeah! This is depressing.
The news from the visa front is that, contrary to rumor, testing negative for AIDS is still a requisite for a multiple-entry visa into Russia (there had been something in the grapevine about how this requirement had been dropped, based on common sense, but that was apparently bum scuttlebutt). There is another rumor to the effect that one can get such a test done around here, but apparently the specimen is sent off somewhere and results obtain after a significant wait (the test I had done in NYC obtained almost immediate results). Life is filled with gossip, these days. I may just wait until next week (?) when/if I get to Houston to have the test done, after which I can go all ahead full on my visa application.
The imminent Shuttle launch has been postponed, apparently, due to Ernesto. I haven't checked since earlier today, but apparently, the Shuttle's launch window is now breathing hard down the neck of the next ISS launch from Baikonur. In any event, I will make a point of letting folks know that I'll more than likely be available to work the mission when it does launch (assuming it launches and lands in September).
Speaking of launches, I checked the Khrunichev Space Center's home page, where the launch date for the Arabsat 4B satellite is stated as the next Marine Corps Birthday, November 10.
That oughta be interesting.
Add three days to clean up and get out of Dodge, and count back 40 days or so (a typical campaign length) and one calculates a departure date in the first week of October. Hmmm.
In any event, the launch date will for sure cause me to miss the ATA conference in New Orleans, so if I am at all interested in retaining my certification, I'm probably going to have to get going with regard to the 10 additional "continuing education" credits I'll need by mid-2007. But that's a rant for another day.
My heart really isn't in hanging out at the store right now.
Cheers...
