1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e6 3.e4 d5 {The characteristic setup of the French Defense.} 4.Be3 {A pathetic attempt to enter the Alapin French, which is not such a good idea given the location of the Knight on c3. On the other hand, it does avoid the main book lines.} dxe4 5.f3 Bb4 6.Qd2 c6 7.O-O-O Qa5 8.a3 Bxc3 {Can Black get counterplay by sacrificing the Bishop on a3? LJ friend [livejournal.com profile] egofood points out that after 8...Bxa3, 9.Nxe4 Qxd2 10.Rxd2 will leave White with a strong center.} 9.Qxc3 Qxc3 10.bxc3 exf3 11.Nxf3 Nbd7 12.Bd3 Nb6? {I think 12...Ng4 is much better here.} 13.Ne5 Nfd5 14.Bd2 f6 15.Nc4 {Threatening to land on d6 with check.} Ke7 16.Rde1 Re8 17.Ne3 Nxe3 18.Bxe3 h6 19.c4 Kf7 20.Be2 {No subtlety, here, although eventually, the threat against h5 will be realized.} e5 21.dxe5 Rxe5 22.Bd4 Ra5 23.Rhf1 {White is far ahead in development.} Be6 24.c5 Nd7 {Now, White can win back the pawn he has been down and put pressure on the Black kingside.} 25.Bh5+ g6 26.Bxg6+ Kxg6 27.Rxe6 Rf8 28.Kb2 Nxc5? {

Position after Black's 28th move.

This allows White to quickly penetrate to the seventh rank with his Rook.} 29.Rexf6+ Rxf6 30.Rxf6+ Kh7 {Pretty much forced, and now White wins the pawn on b7 with the Rook after first removing the defending Knight.} 31.Bxc5 Rxc5 32.Rf7+ Kg6 33.Rxb7 Rc4 {I think this is a waste of time, but then again, I also think Black can resign in any event.} 34.h3 h5 35.g4 hxg4 36.hxg4 a5 37.Rb6 a4? {Not good, but at this point, there are no viable alternatives for Black, IMO.} 38.Rb4! Rxb4+ 39.axb4 Kg5 40.Ka3? {Wasting time going after the pawn on a4. An immediate 40.c4 was quicker and safer. I hate K+P vs. K endings.} Kxg4 41.Kxa4 Kf5 42.c4 Ke5 43.b5 cxb5+ 44.cxb5 Kd6 45.Ka5 Kc7 46.Ka6 Kb8 47.Kb6 (0-1)

Is there a drawing resource for Black at the end? I don't think so, but then again, I haven't done exhaustive analysis.
