Confronting the pain...
Jan. 12th, 2007 11:59 pmThe operative word colocation today was "root canal."
My jaw started to hurt last night, and applying OraJel to the painful site did nothing to alleviate the pain, nor did bathing the site in cold water. I eventually fell asleep and while I woke up feeling no pain, there was a certain numbness in the side of my mouth. The numbness dissipated upon eating a piece of toast with my morning coffee.
There comes a time you can't evade reality any more, and I decided today was the day as far as my mouth was concerned. I ended up in a dentist's office for the first time in... a long time, and though I was gratified to hear that the condition of my mouth was generally excellent, the fact was that new cavities had developed underneath old fillings, and one of them had finally infected the tooth's nerve, hence the root canal.
The procedure went pretty smoothly, with a few momentary twinges of pain as various nerves were put to sleep. I was amazed at the variety of epoxy-like compounds in use as well. Of course, it goes without saying that the price - $1,600 - had its own special effect on me, too.
I napped most of the afternoon and in the evening, after dinner, Galina and I went to the Barnes & Noble shopping center, where she browsed and I played a game against a certain Brian, barely escaping with a victory after playing most of the game a pawn down.
I'm on the hook to work in the Moscow Support Room three days next week and next weekend, so the month is, um, starting to look up, work-wise. I must say, I won't much mind getting some written work in as well. I plan to do some additional decluttering of the office over the weekend, in the meantime.
Last night, we watched The Illusionist and liked it. I particularly liked the fact one could enjoy a story about a magician where the illusions enhanced a story line rather than posing puzzles for the viewer. The character of the crown prince, with his cold, calculating nature that treated the performance as a test of intellect was well drawn, and the end was particularly illuminating. Tonight, we watched Walk the Line, with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, which we also enjoyed (I particularly enjoyed the music and trying to guess who was supposed to be who... missing the character depicting Roy Orbison completely!).
Almost midnight... time to get to sleep.
Cheers...
