Jotting...

I visit the Lifehacker site on a regular basis, and a few weeks ago, it seems, they had a tip about a new service that seemed to fill a need that I've developed with respect to my CrackBe... BlackBerry, specifically: the ability to record short messages to myself.

The service - I don't remember what it was called, actually - was set up to let you send voicemail to specified email addresses and was initiated by sending an email to the site, which would then call your phone, at which point you answer, press the "#" button, and start talking. Upon hanging up, your message would be sent to recipients.

Having to send an email somewhere to start the process was not the way to grab my attention in a positive manner. That, plus the fact that twice, sending an email resulted in no callback.

So it was with some hesitation that I signed up for another service recommended by the folks at Lifehacker, something called Jott.

Jott, which is in a free beta right now, has a more rational approach to what I want to be able to do: You call a number, record a message of up to 15 seconds in length, and hang up. The service uses voice-recognition to transcribe the message and sends it to you in email, along with a link to the site and an audio file of what you said.

I've used the service twice so far, and the recognition is pretty good, in English (which is what I'd expect... of course, that only reflects one data point; the message I left in Russian was judged unintelligible).

There's more to the site than just the basic service, but so far, I'm impressed. It seems like just the thing to capture to-dos when you can't pause to write things down.

Cheers...

It occurs to me the following might have been, um, written with people like Arkin in mind:
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that,
               an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -
               you bet that Tommy sees!
