That seems to be the story of much of my life... never being able to find things, or at least having things go missing at just the wrong times. Lately, this phenomenon seems to have broadened its scope, to the effect of missing categories of things, but then again, it's probably just my imagination.

I actually had a "shorter" short day at JSC today. The staff person I was supporting told me it was pretty common for interpreters to go home early on the weekend.

Natalie was home when I got back, but left soon afterward. I took a nap, and then went with Galina to go shopping and to get some new movies. She got Thank You For Smoking, which I missed viewing as I was putting finishing touches on one last translation, and I got something called Sherlock (I think), which violates almost evey axiom laid down in the Canon (though of course, eventually, we get around to the pipe and the deerstalker hat) and was doubtless someone's idea of a tongue-in-cheek treatment of the subject.

I finally took some advice I read somewhere (Lifehacker?) and tore apart one of those manuals that are printed in 4 languages, but instead of coming off in one nice section, the English pages came off as a handful of nearly individual pages, too thick to staple. The alternatives were to either figure out a way to bind the individual pages, or to attempt to tear off the German and Spanish versions from the back of the manual, leaving only the French pages bound, and hope there was nothing critical that I couldn't figure out.

Instead, I cut a manila folder down to page size, broke out a small hand drill (the thing looks like a screwdriver in use) and threaded some dental floss on a needle, and ended up implementing a binding technique I caught sight of here. The results seems quite workable.

I need to get some sleep, and then tomorrow morning, I need to jump on getting some last-minute items done, getting packed, and getting to the airport.

I also need to give serious thought to a wild idea I had: since I don't expect to be doing any translation work while on this trip, maybe I should take along the old VAIO, proust, which is more compact and still has the applications I might need if some typing is required. For some reason, the thought of traipsing across the ocean with webster, which has turned into my main machine, strikes me as... not quite right.

I'll sleep on it.

Cheers...
