Near Trafalgar Square...
May. 15th, 2007 03:04 pmAll went well with the flight, and the plane even landed a few minutes early at Gatwick. Passport control took a bit longer than 30 minutes, and it turns out the hotel is literally within walking distance of baggage claim.
I tried calling my contact at both numbers given to me, but neither got a favorable result. I shall try again upon returning from London, which is where I am presently (on The Strand, near Trafalgar Square). I've just been to the National Gallery, and am high on Renoir. (You should see this silly grin I have on my face.)
I've lots of impressions, but not much time at this "easyInternetCafé" (the hotel wants $30 per day for broadband service... yeow!).
Apropos of prices, the cost of stuff around here is staggering, to my American wallet. A 150 ml drink cost $2 (£1) on the train from Gatwick to London, which makes it about twice as expensive as airline soda. The Renoir exhibition was £12 (and well worth it, though I'm not sure I've ever coughed up as much for a museum entrance). The ticket at this internet cafe was £1 for 30 minutes.
I should probably start walking back toward Victoria Station and the rail trip back to Gatwick. It's been an exhilarating day (even if I got about 45 minutes of sleep since boarding the plane at 6:45 pm CDT last night).
Cheers...
