It's not that I felt bad after the trip, just tired.

Colby, Kansas, where Shiloh and I stayed on Sunday night, gave me my first taste of cold weather in about a year (and Shiloh her first taste ever), with a cold wind blowing strongly from the north. Surprisingly, the McDonald's across the street hadn't opened by 5 am the next morning, so we set off down the highway, figuring to catch breakfast on the fly.

Eventually we did, after crossing into Colorado, and the only resemblance that the coffee served to me had to actual java was a strong hint of burned something in the liquid. Were it not for the watery consistency, I would have suspected there was old transmission fluid in the cup, by the taste.

Despite it being a "short" mileage day, it seemed to go on forever, even after I got to places that tickled some synapses. As the car came around the last curve of the driveway, I caught sight of the new paint job on the house, and it looks good.

The inside is another story.

Removing the wall between the kitchen and living room is something we seem to be in the habit of doing. We did it in our first house, and I hope the time between ripping out the wall and making it look nice is shorter than it was that first time.

I had forgotten how beautiful it is around here, especially at night, when you can look up at the sky and see the Milky Way with no problem at all. I had forgotten how cold it can get, and how dry the air is. I had forgotten how disorganized the City Market is.

I had also forgotten that I had taken my printer/scanner to Houston, so... there's no scanner at the house here in Pagosa. Ah, well.

Some work came in today, which I dispatched with the usual aplomb. I also got a proofreading assignment from the new client, along with a couple of emails that expressed confusion as to why I wouldn't want to provide said new client with all manner of information about my education, experience, background, areas of translation specialization, software used, and rates for every conceivable type of work?

Indeed. Why do so when, frankly, the principal criterion used by such companies is rate, which is an area where I tend to gravitate toward the premium end of the scale?

Not to mention there are other reasons, too. Such as not telling me of a major disconnect as far as payment terms are concerned (I tell them net 30 days after invoicing, they say nothing until I accept a job, then inform me that, primum, their PO must be signed and returned by postal mail, and secundus, they pay 30 days after the end of the invoicing month.

I must be getting curmudgeonly in my old age.

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow in Durango. I also need to invoice today's work (for which I'll need a printer... <spit>) and last week's work, and turn on the estate lawyer (for which, it turns out, I need a scanner... <spit>), and make a few other calls.

Cheers...
