Catching up...
Dec. 26th, 2007 09:25 pmA long time ago, I wrote about how the chairman of my university Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages tried to establish a Slavic Cultural Center in Port Jefferson, not far from the Stony Brook campus. This past Monday, we all piled into the car and headed east on 25A, down a road I hadn't been down in several decades.
I recognized only vaguely some of the turnings, and virtually none of the landmarks, until we got to the Stony Brook LIRR station. Instead of trying to do a tour of the campus, we pushed on toward Port Jefferson, arriving in time to see a number of cars boarding the ferry for Connecticut. We parked the car and paid for 2 hours of parking.
The wind was pretty cold, so we didn't do too much walking. In fact, about the only thing we did was drop into a place that I remember being there back during school days, the Steamroom Restaurant. This time, instead of the clams on the half shell, I ordered the fish and chips. The food was edible and thoroughly uninspired.
Afterward, we took a ride down the main street away from the water, where I craned my neck to see where the old Slavic Center used to be. If I spied the right building, then nowadays, it's a real estate office.
How conventional.
Anyway, a few yards down the road and the world again deteriorated into a homogeneous soup of strip centers and highway signs, until we got home.
Today, we piled into the car and headed for the Ikea store in Hicksville, as Galina has this idea of shelving my books... in the basement. (Go figure.)
Personally, I am finding that after the first trip, Ikea stores are pretty boring. (I suppose if I were going to, like, spend some cash to redecorate a room, I might have a more positive attitude toward the smörgåsbord of pretties laid out inside the store.)
Amyway, I took it mostly easy in the afternoon, and eventually got down to dealing with the two hazard reports due tomorrow. The work was a bit more difficult than usual, because of a mismatch in the versions of the documents I had to work with, but I eventually got through the them. Once they get sent, the plate will officially be Empty.
And that's not necessarily bad.
Cheers...
