Jan. 20th, 2008 10:27 pmI had a really serious problem today when it came to dealing with the OCR Nightmare. In short, I had a great deal of difficulty sitting down to the job, which isn't like me at all. I think I'm spending too much time thinking about how much work is left to do (and especially, the detailed nature of the check I'm going to have to perform, because the OCR pass missed a cartload of stuff, and what did get output turns my stomach).
I finally started working at around 4 pm. At that time, there were 6000 source words of the OCR Nightmare in the hopper, and about 4,000-4,500 words of a PowerPoint presentation due near the close of day on Tuesday.
By 7 pm, I had translated just about 2300 source words of the former, and started in on the latter.
Woking in PowerPoint has its quirks, but chief among them is the inability to do anything approaching an accurate word count, especially given the propensity of some users to decorate their slides with the enthusiasm of children decorating Christmas trees with an essentially unlimited budget of ornaments.
So in my first pass , I cherry-picked the easy slides (e.g., title slides and slides with graphics). By the time I finished three passes to get at the low-hanging fruit, I had translated 22 of 62 slides and figured the balance of the slides contained 90% of what remained to be done. Assuming I did 1/3 of this number today and another 1/3 tomorrow, I'd be able to finish the job on Tuesday with time to spare. (Well, not really... I'll still be working on the OCR Nightmare.)
After working this plan, I've got 3700 words of the OCR Nightmare left to translate and 27 slides of the PowerPoint file. Things are more or less under control.
