Shiloh got me up fairly early and one of the first things we did after breakfast was to walk to the beach. While doing so, I noted - for the first time - that I have a tendency to exclaim "That's interesting!" quite a bit. I said it when I spied the ice that formed on a pond not far from the house, I said it when I saw how the county had cleared some real estate either inside of or close to a wildlife preserve near the shore, and again when I saw the ice floating on the inlet where the local property owners' association maintains the beach.

Galina is still feeling puny, and the last thing that needed to be done to the redone bedroom (which we "populated" with furniture yesterday) was to install a drop for the cable TV service, which is something I am fully capable of doing. The process went fairly smoothly and everything still works, as does the new drop. We brought Natalie's old Sony upstairs from the basement rather than try to wrestle my folks' old Sony down from the den, which I suspect would've required some disassembly (including, perhaps, parts of the house).

While drilling holes and such, I made some long-overdue backups. For the record, copying a steady stream of data via USB 2.0 on my system transfers about 775 MB per minute; using Firewire just about doubles that figure.

My visit to the bank went well, as far as it went. My dad's checking account was tranferred to a checking account in the name of the estate, for which I am Preliminary Executor, which - according to the lawyer - is a time-limited appointment whose practical consequence is that I cannot pay myself a salary.

When I got home, there was a message waiting for me from the bank, something about how they weren't sure I could actually write checks to pay the estate's bills, which goes counter to what my lawyer told me. Unfortunately, the latter is out of touch until the start of March, but I don't expect any show stoppers. After all, I recall seeing - over the banker's shoulder - the account being opened for a preliminary executor, so it's not as if they've never done this before.

I also stopped by the library to drop off the paperbacks that kept me amused during the flights down to and back from Houson. In exchange, I borrowed a 7-CD package of college-level lectures on ancient history. If this choice works out, there is about a shelf's worth of such courses available to library members.

More work came in, which is always a Good Thing™. That it is due on Monday is even better. By the time I go to sleep tonight, however, I should/must complete at least 1,000 words of the item due by COB tomorrow.

Galina is resting right now at the other end of the house. This is a fairly big plus for me, as I don't have to work with the TV flickering out of the corner of my eye, but also a big minus, as we now find ourselves at opposite ends of the house. I will have to make something of an effort to make myself scarce around the office from time to time.

A number of factors came together for me to fire up ellroy (my VAIO two laptops ago) to do a sync of my Palm IIIx. This will allow me to see if any of that old stuff is worth saving.

In reviewing my to-do list for the day, I note that it remains largely undone, although virtually everything I have accomplished today (except the Palm bagatelle, which took all of about 5 minutes) wasn't on it. If I had the day to "do over" again, I think I would have paid more attention to the higher priority items. The fact that there's still a lot of items left to do is probably more a testament to optimism than anything else. Still, it's been a decent showing. My health continues to be good.

Cheers...
