St. Jerome pulled some strings on my behalf, and as a result, I was able to complete about 4,000 words of translation at near-light speed. Better, I was able to "de-speckle" the result before starting on and completing the first three pages of the last part of the 40K Job.

My use of "de-speckle" represents a near-instantaneous corruption of a nonsense word I devised during a break earlier today - "specleproford" - which is a mediocre crypto-portmanteau word that describes the process of spellchecking, "cleaning" (turning a file segmented for translation memory into a regular file again), proofreading, formatting, and "detailing" (which, in an earlier context, I would have called "applying a spit shine") that must take place after the first draft of a translation is completed.

I put Floola through its paces today, and was generally pleased with the result.

It turns out that if you've been using something other than iTunes with your iPod, Floola will want you to hook the iPod to iTunes to (apparently) smooth out any database wrinkles. I was able to do this without much of a problem, as I have an old copy of iTunes installed on an ancient Dell that's I use for my 3G iPod. After disconnecting from iTunes, Floola worked like a charm.

The only thing so far it hasn't been able to deal with is transfer Audible book files from my hard drive to the iPod. However, since I've been creating MP3s of the books I've bought (so that I may listen to them on the hardware of my choosing), this isn't really a show-stopper.

However, I've found it's really easy to use the program to manage the content on the iPod, even though the documentation for the program is, um, a bit on the rare side.

XAMPP is working nicely, and I've got a copy of TikiWiki running on my VAIO, but it is s-l-o-w! I've recently downloaded (and installed) a copy of XAMPP designed to run off a USB thumb drive, but I hesitate to put it to the test, mostly because I'd have to make sure the local version is well and truly not running.

Another reason is a nagging question about how much the fact it's on a USB drive will slow it down additionally. When I get some time, I may check it out.

I am definitely going to have to make time this week - deadline or no - to get some non-translation things done.

Cheers...
