I had an indifferent night's sleep last night, waking early into a sort of fog, induced mostly by the subject of the current week's LJ Idol essay, What I “Should” Care About, But Don’t.

I was a little puzzled at first about how to go about the subject, wondering what on earth one should care about and not do so. It occurred to me, then, after two false starts last night, that the quotes around the word "should" were there for a reason. After that, the piece very nearly wrote itself.

Howsomeverwhichway, the two false starts have merit in their own twisted little fashion, which I might one day expand upon, but not now, as time grows short.

I have not gotten as far with my translations as I had hoped, but since Galina has arranged for a conference tomorrow morning with an exterminator, I figure I'll have an opportunity to catch up to where I want to be between now and when we actually leave. Still, the short list of to-do items on my white board are imposing enough, entailing some go-around-and-look-for-stuff activity, which is always a time sink.

Probably the hardest part of packing, for me, is making sure I don't forget some organic component of the tech side of my world. (There's few things less pleasant than showing up with your computer, but without the computer's power supply.)

So, I finally sat down and consolidated all of my lists - the engineer in me loves lists, dontchaknow - into a mind map, which gave me an opportunity to give the latest version of Tony Buzan's iMindMap a try.

The product is not comprehensive, but it'll do for the time being.

AlexPGP's inventory of stuff that might be useful while on the road

Instead of using work to fill in the evening, I made an effort to catch this evening's episode of The Mentalist, and was not disappointed. The one problem area that I see for the future of the franchise is analogous to the situation in The X Files, where after a while, the "unbeliever" in the ensemble has to start coming around, or the series ends up abusing the viewer's patience. Still, there would appear to yet be time for the skeptic to see the light, and enough other avenues to explore as well.

I plan to get up early to make up for today's deficit in work output. We may, or may not get on the road tomorrow; I've made my peace with that.

Cheers...
