Had the end client not canceled the gig in Kazakhstan, I'd have been in Albuquerque tonight, for a flight out tomorrow morning. I'm coming to the realization that the part that really bothers me - aside from the lack of candor about the job back when it was proposed - is the lack of campaign opportunities until next year.

And then I mentally slap myself and wonder: What am I complaining about?

Work continues apace upstairs in the kitchen and in my old and future office. Today, the electrician joined the merry fracas, and despite a few missteps along the way, the floor heating panels in my office now work and the island in the kitchen is now gone and the stove that used to be part of the island has moved over against the wall.

The folks at the local Radio Shack mentioned a USB dingus called a "magicJack" that provides a year's worth of VoIP for $20, to what appears to be a real phone number with 911 support. The device itself costs $39.95, which includes one year of service.

I managed to hunt down a plug-in phone (hard to do, as we had thrown out several as a result of our decision to live without a landline phone), and so far, the system works as advertised (though technically, the number I've been assigned is for a Grand Junction exchange).

And why, you might ask, did I darken the threshold of the local Radio Shack? Well, they're the people to go around here to if you want DirecTV or Dish Network, which we decided to spring for because (a) one of them - DirecTV - had a special going on, and (b) our poor analog boob tube is only capable of receiving two Albuquerque channels, which is beginning to grate on Galina's nerves.

Supposedly, both channels have already gone digital, but if that's true, then the repeaters between Albuquerque and here must be doing digital-to-analog conversion, because we still receive programming. In the end, through, we're going to need some kind of link to the world, especially if our medium-range plan to rent this place for some part of the year is to have any chance of success.

The LJ Idol essay I posted yesterday was both the easiest and the hardest I've written yet. Easiest, because there was no shortage of material to choose from; hardest, because I wanted to keep the result manageable and focused. There hasn't been much traffic in general today; I'm hoping I haven't blown it.

In any event, I'm going to have to hit the keyboard hard tomorrow and get some serious translation words committed to pixels. The plate is rather full.

Cheers...
