I don't know exactly how this cropped up.

Actually, I do know, but unfortunately, it doesn't fit in with the overall look-and-feel of the piece I'm working on. Still, it might come in useful in the future:

As it turns out, nobody in his right mind stands up in the middle of a combat zone to light a butt, to say nothing of two or three at one time. On the other hand, our drill instructor made sure all of us smokers were aware of one huge "adverse health effect" of our habit by having us observe new recruits smoking outside their barracks on the other side of the base parade ground, their faces clearly visible at night as they took drags on their cancer sticks.

"You'll notice," said our D.I., as we stood at attention in the cool evening air, "that the undisciplined mob over there is standing at a distance that is well within range of the M-14 rifle." He paused, and then continued, in a somewhat tired voice, "And as you know, if the enemy is in range, then so are you."

It was left to us recruits to complete the syllogism.
