Among the "lessons learned" during the current assignment is another chorus of "pay attention, dammit!" I did take a look at the translation before agreeing to edit it, but I had to have been just plain sloppy in my assessment, based on how much "essential" editing I've found myself having to do.

Editors of translations are capable of inserting three fundamental types of edits:

(1) Correcting an error. This seems pretty obvious, except that what constitutes an "error" is not all that cut and dried. Obviously, if the source says "turn the power on" and the translation reads "turn the power off," that's an error. Grammar and punctuation errors live here, too. Consider also that all errors are not created equal. Transposing two letters of an author's name in one of several hundred bibliographic references at the end of a 100-page document is not nearly as serious as the same error appearing on the cover page of the document.

(2) Correcting minor errors. Here, too, "minor error" is a difficult concept to nail down. For the nonce, I'll just say it describes things like awkward phrasing, the kind of language that would raise the eyebrow of a reader.

(3) Rewriting the translation. Sometimes, text has been so poorly translated, it must be scrapped entirely and the source retranslated. Otherwise, such excursions merely scratch an itch in the editor's ego.

(Can you tell I just don't want to go back to this editing job?)

Anyway, I just sent a short note to my project manager to summarize a phone conversation we had earlier. The money quote:
Please be informed that my progress with this document has been slow,
running to about 500-550 words per hour, due to extensive editing to
correct poor word choices, improper usage, incorrect terminology,
nonstandard punctuation, and awkward sentence structure.
That kind of says it all.

To be sure, not as elegant as the plan in the palindrome "A man, a plan, a canal - Panama!" but a plan nonetheless!

I have gotten about as far today with editing as I did yesterday (which is not saying much). As I write this, I have just a hair over 11,000 words left to eyeball and correct, and about 3,000 words to translate (don't ask), not to mention two items to write for LJ Idol (where, at least, the deadline is Monday night). All the rest of this bill-paying bushwa is due Monday morning.

Apropos of which, I should mention that the two subjects for LJ Idol - "The End of My Rope" and a "Current Events" piece about a story published online - seem to align well with a recent post wherein I described an incident that occurred during an assignment some time ago, and another post where I refer to a news story that I ran across yesterday.

The primary question is the one asked by Dirty Harry: "Do I feel lucky?"

This is not to say I would submit either post as a finished product, but to use either (or both) as raw material? Je ne sais pas... c'est bien possible!

But I digress... et bien, revenons à nos moutons...

The Plan is this:

* Tonight
   - Edit another 1500 words or so (3 hr)
   - Translate 1000 words (2 hr)
   - Give some thought to LJ Idol items, if I am still conscious.
* Tomorrow
   - Edit 5000 words (7-8 hr)
   - Translate 1000 words (2 hr)
   - Do some LJ Idol scribbling, if I am still conscious.
* Sunday
   - Finish the editing (7-8 hr)
   - Finish the translation (2 hr)
   - Write first draft for LJ Idol items, if I am still conscious.
* Monday
   - Send finished work.
   - Invoice finished work.
   - Finalize LJ Idol items.

Or is this post actually going to be my entry for "The End of My Rope"? ¿Quién sabe...??

The edit continued to pain like a rotten tooth. The translation went like grain through a goose, as I know the subject like the back of my hand. Email held a small surprise.

As for the rest:

* Tonight
   - Edit another 1500 words or so
   - Translate 1000 words
   - OCR incoming assignment query
   - Figure out how to get incoming assignment translated
   - Send email accepting incoming assignment
   - Give some thought to LJ Idol items, if I am still conscious.
* Tomorrow
   - Expect NTP from client re: incoming assignment;
        if (NTP == true) { put_wheels_in_motion; } else { reset_wheels; fuggetaboutit; }
   - Edit 5000 words (7-8 hr)
   - Translate 1000 words (2 hr)
   - Do some LJ Idol scribbling, if I am still conscious.
* Sunday
   - Finish the editing (7-8 hr)
   - Finish the translation (2 hr)
   - Write first draft for LJ Idol items, if I am still conscious.
* Monday
   - If incoming assignment materializes, process the translation.
   - Send finished work.
   - Invoice finished work.
   - Finalize LJ Idol items.
