I only noticed the appearance of an Administrator account in Windows with the advent of XP, and frankly, never really saw much use in it, as the default user account that was created upon first firing up the system could pretty much do anything the Administrator could.

In Windows 7, something appears to have changed.

Against my better judgment (dealing with Nuance), I upgraded to PaperPort 12, which both Nuance and Microsoft agree will run in Windows 7. When I attempted to install it from my user account, the process spit an error message back at me:
1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime
Often, just using the error message in a Google search will point you at a bunch of sites that provide information on how to solve problems like this. I did so in this case, but the results all seemed aimed at pre-Windows 7 systems.

One common theme did emerge from the advice, though: check your user permissions vis-a-vis the installed directory. I interpreted this to mean: Why not try to install as Administrator, instead of user?

Guess what? The install went off without a glitch.

In other news, Quicken InvoiceManager seems to not want to install at all, but in this case, it would appear to be something associated with the structure of the setup program itself, as it fails to run, even from the Administrator account.

I am getting positively into the Christmas spirit! As I prepare to definitively hit the bricks once more (a bit late, true, but I had trouble falling asleep last night), the words of The Twelve Days of Christmas keep running through my head.

Except they're not quite how I remember them from earlier years:
Eight reports on status,
Due twixt now and Monday,
Each sent once I finish,
All. Done. In. Word!
Slides are due tonight,
And morrow
All in Power Point,
With a tox-i-ci-ty re-port!
My how things've changed.

What did we do before computers?

Cheers...

Four of eight status reports are done and sent, and one of three PPT files has been done and sent.

The kids threaten to kidnap me tomorrow for their own nefarious purposes, which is fine with me, though I suspect I'll have time enough in the morning to do one more PPT file and maybe one of the remaining four status reports.

This will leave three status reports and one PPT file for Sunday, though technically, I could leave one or two files for delivery on Monday morning.

It seems the Modern Warfare 2 game I recently requires hardware capabilities that far exceed anything I've got, except perhaps the machine that Drew gave me a while ago. Of course, the only problem is that I've installed Linux on that machine, and the game requires something more... Windows-y.

To scratch an itch, I made what basically amounts to stone soup this morning: mushrooms, onion, potatoes, cabbage, tomato, chile, shrimp, salmon, spices. I'm feeling like going upstairs right now, though, and cooking some spaghetti.

Yeah, that's what I'll do. Who knows, maybe there's something worth watching on the tube, too?

Cheers...
