It's been one of those days.

I had intended to go to the ham radio breakfast this morning, but in a departure from form, the animals decided to let me sleep this morning until 7 am, which is way too late to start getting ready for such a breakfast (typically, folks are seated and orders are in by about 6:30 am).

The sleep was wiped from my eyes when I checked email on my BlackBerry. (This I routinely do upon arising, since East Coast clients have been known to send rush jobs at 7 am their time, which is 5 am locally.) I saw that Natalie had called, and... what? 4:08 am? I must've slept through the ringing!

I dialed her without a second's hesitation, because phone calls at 4 am are generally nothing but bad news, but as the phone was ringing, I decided that - had this really been one of those calls - she would've called her mother's phone, too, and that hadn't happened as far as I could tell.

Sure enough, nothing was the matter. In my semi-conscious state upon awaking, I had read yesterday's date (04/08) as a time (04:08).

Whew!

I took the car for a spin this afternoon to go check out a "garage sale" Galina thought I might find interesting (nope), and then stopped by the City Market to pick up a few items. On the way home, I could not help but note that the melting snow had filled the ruts that run along the sides of our local roads for water drainage, and it reminded me of my one lasting image of Sasha (the Dog Who Would Chew Anything), whom I can easily see in my mind, running back and forth along those sparkling streams with a sort of wild canine gaiety, splashing in the ice-cold water as if she wanted to see how far she could project the spray.

When I got back to the house, I took a moment to go out back to where the snow has melted, to the place where Sasha now rests, a few feet from Ming (our faithful Peke), the two of them ever at peace, looking out at the mountains. I tried pushing the sadness of their loss out of my mind by focusing on the joy they brought into our lives, and succeeded to an extent, but it's an effort.

Dammit, I miss them.

Cheers...
