Turkey Day...
Nov. 25th, 2010 06:59 pmI had hoped to spend enough time working today so as to pare down the number of words I'll have to deal with tomorrow, but then the kids called to move up the family rendezvous time from 4 pm to 2 pm, so I was only able to translate 1,000 source words before having to "turn to" and get ready for almost two dozen guests.
Part of the effort involved making bread on the fly, which involved mixing the "artisan" ingredients (with about a half-tablespoon extra yeast and about a half teaspoon of sugar), letting the mixture rise for four hours, and then forming the loaves, etc. I used the Weight Watchers scale Galina brought from Houston to make sure the loaves were of more or less equal weight (490, 502, and 505 grams). In the end, they turned out well (and I sent one of the loaves back home with the kids).
I also improvised a cheese ball by combining 6 oz of cream cheese and 6 oz of Wisconsin white cheddar (very mild) along with about a teaspoon of garlic powder, a tablespoon of A-1 and another of hot sauce (from Costa Rica), all put through a food processor and the result rolled in walnut crumbs. People apparently liked it a lot, as I was asked for my recipe.
I didn't count the turnout, but we were prepared for two dozen people to show up, and I think most of them did. As I looked around the assembled company and thought about what there was to be thankful for, I was reminded that there are those who aren't in as good a place as I am today, so that's what I focused on, with the hope that time and accrued wisdom result in the improvement of all our situations.
But there was little time for philosophizing. The food was good, the football entertaining, and the company excellent. There were moments where everything was going absolutely crazy, but all in all, it was a pretty good Thanksgiving. I hope yours was a good one, too.
Cheers...
