Thanksgiving Friday...
Nov. 26th, 2010 07:16 pmThe plate is clear, if you don't count a short test translation I agreed to do by Monday for a French agency. I must admit, I am a bit surprised things have gotten this far, since the rate I quoted to them in response to their initial mass query tends to discourage the vast majority of companies seeking to blindly refill the ranks of their translator database.
Oh, and there are invoices to file as well.
* * * I find myself flailing on the subject of this week's LJ Idol entry.
Various people have made comments about the process of writing for LJ Idol, which is likely not a process much different from writing per se. I believe it was LJ friend
edith_jones who recently described as "wasted"—and rightfully so, in my opinion—a bye taken because you simply couldn’t find a suitable subject to write about, although in the end, one does what one must.
This week’s subject is “the elephant in the room.” As it turns out, I have an approach to the subject that fits like a tailored glove, but it’s almost beyond personal, and if I ever were to write the tale, I'd have to invoke the Mark Twain principle that it not be published until a century after my death, which would, alas, make it a wee bit late for this week's submission, but I digress...
Ironically, those kinds of ideas—and here I lump together any notion that seems workable for whatever reason, but really isn’t—have a tendency to suppress the formation of new ideas. One need only find a way over the obstacle, which is admittedly easier said than done.
See, the thing is that it’s not all that difficult to shove an elephant into a room, be it in the setting of recalling a personal experience or straight-out fiction. What’s difficult is doing it and making it interesting.
* * * Among the questions asked yesterday was how old Shiloh is, and the off-the-cuff consensus was around three years of age. It turns out she was probably born during March of 2007, which makes her closer to four.
My, how time flies.
Cheers...
