Avignon...

Did some work this morning, sent it off, and then Galina and I headed up to Avignon, to see what we could see.

Me, I wanted to see the bridge, that famous Pont d'Avignon that played havoc with adolescent life in 7th grade, as Miss Tucker tried to arouse our interest in la belle France with a song about people dancing on the bridge (which, as it turned out, was very likely a transcriber's mistake, as people were much more likely to dance under the bridge on the island in the middle of the Rhône River, which passes by this ancient city.

And so I found myself at the bridge that, as it turns out, had quite a bit of trouble standing where it was built and eventually was allowed to just stop in the middle of the river.

This part of France, called Provence, is famous for—among quite a number of things—lavender. And Galina loves lavender (while I cannot abide the odor of lavender).

After checking out the bridge, we walked around the center of the city. Perhaps the best known landmark in the old part of the city is the Palace of the Popes (Palais de Papes), the story behind which is beyond the scope of this journal. Suffice it to say that the city of Avignon actually belonged to the Papacy until the French Revolution, and played a fairly significant role in the history of the Catholic Church. The following shot is a panorama made by stitching several individual photos together. The Palace is on the right, the Notre Dame de Doms cathedral is on the left.

We got back to the house around 4 pm, to see if there was any work coming in (not having connectivity is particularly painful around these parts). There was, but I also missed a job because of its rush nature and the 6-hour time difference between me and my client.

Dinner was pollock, with boiled new potatoes, salad, and some vin (très) ordinaire.

Cheers...
