Depending on factors such as getting lost and engaging in one-sided discussions with representatives of the local constabulary on the finer points of measuring vehicle speed using radar, the trip from Colorado and Houston can theoretically be done as one long 16-plus hour swoop, but the trick to doing it in just that way—from west to east, and in such a way that one arrives at a reasonable hour—requires leaving early enough to account for the loss of an hour as one crosses the boundary from the Mountain time zone into the Central Time zone.

Which means: hitting the road around 3:30 am.

Today, Galina and I did just that and managed the trek in just under 17 hours, using what I call "the great southern route," past Clines Corners, through Vaughan, Roswell, Pecos, Ft. Stockton, and San Antonio.

We managed to cover 999.4 miles. before running into our first highway delay, consisting of some road surface work not far from San Antonio. The jam soon cleared, and we covered the remaining 44 miles to our goal in Houston in good time.

Great balls of fire, but this place is hot.

Cheers...
