Puttering about...
Jul. 29th, 2011 11:42 pmThere was a period, during my undergraduate days, when I immersed myself in the work of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald. One of the unexpected pleasures I derived from Chandler's work was recognizing pieces—sometimes large pieces—of his short stories in his novels. To borrow a phrase from Heinlein, Chandler took his own stuff, filed off the serial numbers, and passed it off as a new work.
It was similar enough when reused that even a non-lit-major undergrad like me could recognize it, and as I have pretty much always had a fascination for writing, it was interesting to see how the text had been changed to suit the new environment and to admire the skill with which any potential seams had been smoothed over.
And so, having gotten hold of the unbroadcast pilot of last year's BBC production of Sherlock, I was able to not only enjoy yet another retelling of a story I do not tire of, but I was also given an opportunity to compare and contrast the two versions and speculate—on a rather shallow level, given only one viewing—on why various changes were made. Overall, I think what ended up being the "official" first episode is much stronger than this pilot, although the pilot has its own strong moments as well.
A couple of bands from the "D" tropical storm of the year passed overhead this morning, dumping quite a bit of moisture and helping keep temperatures down (to the point where I could take Shiloh for a drive without having to worry about not being able to leave the car with her inside).
Piles of work showed up today. I now have nearly 50,000 words in the hopper (most of them due later in the month). Happy days, or something.
Cheers...
