Things have a way of coming together...
Nov. 4th, 2011 08:08 pmI had asked for my office UPS to be put in Galina's car, because I had forgotten to take it along, but it got left behind.
Stuff happens, and since it would probably cost as much to ship the old one as to buy a new one, I got a new one while Galina and I were out and about today. As it turns out, the new one comes with a USB port and software that will allow a computer connected to the UPS to shut down in the event mains power goes out for an extended period of time.
With the UPS up and running, I started my backup server (the one whose original hard drive lost its partition table when power was cut to the unit). Then I realized I had no network cable long enough to run from my router to the server (and setting up a wireless bridge to cover a gap of about 12 feet didn't seem like the thing to do), but our former tenant—the one who left in April—did leave behind enough "scrap" cat-5 cable that I was able to cobble together an adequate cable (at least once I found my old network cable tool kit in the basement).
As far as server placement is concerned, there's a case for keeping it nearby, but there's also a case for situating it in an unused bedroom at the other end of the house (in which case, I would use the bridge).
* * * I didn't achieve the same level of activity today as I did the past few days, but I nevertheless managed to max out all of the goals set for me by fitbit. I also managed to consume only half the calories allotted to me for the day, where said allocation is supposed to bring my weight down to a desired target over the course of four months.
I tried taking Shiloh for a walk, but she persists in pulling, which I find annoying. I will try to more consistently apply the lessons of the session she and I had with a trainer some time ago, and not worry too much about distance walked.
* * * The plate is clean. I sent back two documents this morning. The weekend is, theoretically, free.
Cheers...
