Oh, what a day...
Mar. 27th, 2012 06:28 pmI got an urgent job sent to me by my best client, which I was reluctant to refuse, which had the effect of turning today into some kind of translation mega-marathon. I managed to send off the urgent item, and I've still got three items left from that same client.
I didn't get to them because not only is the job I'm doing for my newest client fairly involved, it's that the client himself is very particular.
Now "being particular" about things is something I'm good at, but with 6,000 words to go by mid-morning Thursday and having to combine my part with someone else's in the bargain (and make the sutures invisible), I was feeling pretty much behind the eight-ball up until a little while ago, when I did an end-of-day source-words-left count. I'm well below 2,000 (my head is spinning, dig?), which takes quite a bit of the load off my mind.
Applying a new format to my document apparently caused all of the hidden text (created by Wordfast) to become unhidden, so when my overall word count showed a number that was 170% of what I started with, I just about freaked out, because while the word count of an English translation of a Russian text is greater than the Russian word count, there is no way the count can legitimately expand by 70%.
Did I ever tell you of the translator I once worked with who was incapable of "answering a question" (3 words), but would happily "provide a response to an asked question" (7 words)? He didn't last long as a freelancer, but I digress...
Anyway, now that I know what caused the explosive growth in the word count, I'm just not going to waste time worrying about it. I'll doubtless have to do an especially thorough despeckle tomorrow and Thursday morning, so I'll take care of it then.
Cheers...
