Galina had a pretty rough night with some kind of stomach virus, so it was up to me to entertain the grandkids for breakfast. As I attempted to cook gluten-free pancakes, I broke out the chess set (!) and tried to explain how a king and queen can gang up on a lone opposing king and checkmate him, with limited success. (Huntür knows the moves; for Mathew, today's mini-exercise was doubtless something completely new).

The pancakes didn't turn out so well, the result of using new mix with a new pan (cast iron) on a new electric stove. The distraction of a chess lesson probably didn't help, either. The grandkids were too polite to say anything, at least out loud. (The pancakes were left mostly uneaten on their plates.)

Between popping my head in to see how Galina was doing, I managed to complete the no-rush item that showed up yesterday and to translate more than I expected of the psychology piece. And I did it in time to catch this week's training session at the humane society.

I'm seriously thinking someone ought to follow Marnie (the young woman leading the training) and capture everything she says with (preferably) a video camera. So much of what she says makes just drop-dead common sense, but it comes at such a breakneck rate (at least, for me) that one is likely to forget most of it because of what's being said next.

Galina seems to be in better spirits, so I hope she is over whatever it was.

Cheers...
