Loads of fun with Sputnik...
Oct. 4th, 2012 09:29 pmIf memory serves, Isaac Asimov saw "coincidence everywhere as an inevitable consequence of the laws of probability, according to which having no unusual coincidence is far more unusual than any coincidence could possibly be."
Be that as it may, but I took some time today to get a self-described extensible "meta-wiki" called Sputnik up and running, and aside from some conceptual difficulties having to do with what my old typing teacher used to describe as "the nut handling the keys," getting the thing to work was scary easy on my rather modest Linux box.
The coincidence, for the historically challenged among us, has to do with the fact that Sputnik—a small, beeping piece of hardware that kicked off the Space Age—was launched 55 years ago today. I was alive at the time, but don't recall any hubbub around our house related to the event, and I was too young to be going to school.
The Sputnik software seems not as easy to "drive" as the Instiki I got working a few days ago, but its demands appear to be at least an order of magnitude less than those for Instiki, and if I read the description correctly, it has some fairly interesting capabilities that may be of use to me in-house.
Apropos of which, I am curious as to how one might go about taking something like a Raspberry Pi and turning it into a Web server that you can seamlessly plug into the network port of your laptop, ending up with a configuration that goes out to the Web or "out" to a box on your desk, depending on what you ask for.
Enough work. I put together about 1500 words of marketing copy this morning, followed by about 3,000 words of translation in the afternoon. I'm beat and Galina and I are expecting some long-expected company tomorrow. (Hooray!)
