I received orders yesterday from my main client to take the day off, an instruction that I was only too happy to fulfill, especially considering I have about 16,000 source words on the plate for said client.

I continued my lollygagging ways today, staying away from the computer as much as possible.

Galina and I went garage-sale-hopping yesterday. We are learning that estate sales are generally not good sources of bargains, as in most cases they are run by people who do this kind of thing for a living, which means that most of the prices are pretty high when compared to sales intended to clear junk out of the house.

We stopped by an estate sale yesterday, and as is usually the case, my eye was drawn to the bookcase in the living room just off the front door. It is a habit, despite the fact that most such shelves are poorly populated, both in terms of numbers of books (not really a fair criterion for criticism) and breadth of subjects covered (sadly, these can generally be enumerated on the back of a matchbook cover with plenty of room to spare).

Unsurprisingly, the books on sale at yesterday's estate sale were priced fairly high ($5 for a hardback, $2 for a paperback). On the other hand, I was duly impressed with the range of subjects addressed by the books. Travel in Italy, Italian phrase books, books on memory improvement, visualization, principles of design, a number of classics (a well-thumbed Tennyson among them), and quite a number of books by Hunter Thompson. I would have bought quite a lot of what was on that shelf had the stated price not been so high (and apparently not negotiable).

Instead, I scratched my itch by purchasing what has turned out to be a very interesting book on linguistics, The Stuff of Thought, by Steven Pinker, and a volume titled Living in a Foreign Language, by Michael Tucker, which may sound like a book about language but is more one of those travelogues describing the life of an American couple (in this case television actors) as they experience "food, wine, and love in Italy." Don't get me wrong, I read the first chapter, and I think I'm going to enjoy reading it (if I ever get the time).

Time to move some stuff onto/off of my iPod/iPad. Then to sleep.

Cheers...
