Computer fun (not)...
May. 8th, 2013 09:30 pmI should probably devote some time to thoroughly moving all of my stuff to the new computer (which has, to date, been used for lighter duties), because in addition to the Usual Nasties™, the OS is now regularly terminating applications without actually having them do what's necessary to clean up after themselves.
In the meantime, after having watched Jack Reacher with Galina, I'm running another repair operation on my Office 2010 install. The next step is to figure out how to "repair" any potential OS issues without actually having to reinstall everything from scratch (which I can't do in any event, because the software for burning a copy of the Windows 7 install DVD from the recovery partition never worked to begin with).
In other news, I got some unexpected help from one of the staff members of the Half Price Bookstore over on El Camino. I had flirted with the idea of buying the first of Bernard Cornwell's books from the Sharpe series, but Amazon's price for the Kindle edition was too steep for my taste (something like $12.95, if memory serves), and while B&N had a paperback available, it costs $15.00.
As it turned out, the guy who helped me find Sharpe on the Half Price shelves mentioned that the first book in Cornwell's series is not chronologically the first about Sharpe, which was consistent with what I gathered from reading the free sample that Amazon sent of Sharpe's Rifles. So I ended up buying Sharpe's Tiger, which features the hero as a private serving in India, instead of Sharpe's Rifles, where the action starts with Sharpe already an officer and serving as a quartermaster.
Not, given my recent uptick in work, that I've got all that much time to put any kind of dent in it.
Cheers...
