I caught the new Chromecast device on sale from its $35 advertised price last weekend, and it arrived today. It basically appears to be a wireless device that links to one's home network and to which other devices on the network can send video and audio data, which are in turn output to HDMI.

There are apparently apps out there (e.g., YouTube) that are "cast" ready, meaning that once you have established contact between your computer and the device, one can cause YouTube videos that normally play on your computer to be output from the Chromecast HDMI video port, in much the same way that one can send a video that's supposed to play on one's iPad to an AppleTV device.

The Usual Suspects™—such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, and HBO Go—are ready to go with Chromecast. Me, I'd like to see something that would allow me to send stuff from my own local cloud to my television. Whether that happens or not, between all the devices out there that provide this kind of functionality, and services that provide content, if I was a cable or dish mogul, I'd be getting a bit nervous.

I know that I am again getting pretty tired of paying for umpteen gazillion channels trying to sell me something, or even a few "prime" channels (like HBO) that provide hugely irrelevant programming (like the show the other night featuring a comic trashing George Bush, recorded in 2006) or seemingly endless repeats of snoozer movies, when it turns out the only shows I'm really interested in watching are network shows that, technically, are broadcast without charge (although to actually watch them, I need to be able to capture digital signals).

Cheers...
