I spent some time the other day trying to figure out how to get a file of anniversaries included in my diary file in org mode.

Said anniversaries (mostly birthdays, with a smattering of other events) had lived in my diary file for a while, but then I ran across several articles online that sort of opened my eyes about the features I hadn't been aware of in the diarty feature, and I felt it didn't make sense to mix relatively dynamic information (about what's happening, or going to happen in my life) with information that was not only utterly static (birthdays tend to be that way) but also somewhat awkwardly stated, e.g.
%%(diary-anniversary 11 10 1775) The Marine Corps is %d years old.
which—FWIW—will cause my agenda to bust out with
The Marine Corps is 240 years old.
this coming November 10, but I digress...

The reason I was looking for a way to include the contents of one file in another was that I assumed (that word again) that diary entries had to be read in from the diary file.

Not so.

So now, I've got the static info living in a file appropriately named catchall.org (with a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff), and a diary file that's... smokin'!

In other news, Galina and I got roped into serving as judges for an academic competition to be held in the near future among students of Russian.

To add injury to injury <grin>, I have been asked to "say a few words" about myself during the opening ceremony. Not sure why, really, except for the fact that I make my living as a translator and interpreter (though not so much of the latter, these days).

Cheers...
