Too much excitement...
May. 1st, 2015 08:42 pmTurning onto NASA Parkway yesterday evening while on my way to tai chi, I noticed a rather large plume of smoke rising in the distance. As I came nearer to the school, I started to wonder if perhaps the shopping center where the school is located was aflame.
It wasn't. It was the Hampton Inn next door.
I was rerouted around the are where the fire trucks had set up and ended up parking in the office of a real estate company and walking the rest of the way to school, past the police lines. The fire was still going when class let out 90 minutes later, and the story pretty much led off all the late evening local network channel newscasts.
I drove past the place today, and in my completely informal opinion, the place looks like a complete writeoff. The third floor is gone, some of the walls have collapsed, and it seems all the windows are gone. It was mid-afternoon, but the fire department still had equipment and men at the scene, and there were at least three media vans in the parking lot next door.
* * * In other news, I ordered a sampler package of three Exo energy bars, the principal selling point, it would seem, is that they are made with cricket flour. I found there to be no particularly "crickety" taste to the bars (although the be frank, I would not have recognized one had it been standing at center stage dressed in a neon green evening gown, so to speak). If it wasn't for the fact that these bars are a bit on the expensive side (more than $3 each, with shipping), I might be tempted to consume these on a more regular basis, as they do have 10 g of protein per bar.
* * * We've been talking about it for weeks, and before it became too late to put down sod this year, I went and rented a small tiller from Home Depot to help break up the soil in the area that needs sod and in next to the garage, which used to host various decorative bushes but has been lying fallow (with some scratchy, strange greenery) for nearly the past year.
I took advantage of the rental's four-hour window to do get what needed to get done and return the tiller. I guess I'll be putting down some sod tomorrow, if it doesn't become too hot.
Cheers...
