It was mostly a sunny day today. I even took a break from translation around 10 am to mow the back yard, mostly because if I hadn't done it then, there might not be an opportunity to do so for a few days, and I sorely dislike venturing into the back yard with a machete.

I managed to settle down and do some workmanlike translation, completing almost 6,000 words today, which represents about half of what's left in the job. The thing that absolutely drove me nuts was not trying to research all the abbreviations, but trying to figure out if a given abbreviation should be researched.

One of the things that leads to feelings of frustration in my work is running across an abbreviation that occurs quite often on the Web, but always in abbreviated form, as if everyone in the Russian-speaking world simply knows what the abbreviation means, so nobody ever feels any twinge of guilt for not providing an expansion.

A case in point for me was the very telegraphic "Приемка ВП, ОС."

As a starting point, I noted that the same document made several mentions of the "ВП МО РФ," which I recognized as the abbreviation for Военное представительство Министерства обороны РФ, a mouthful that translates more or less directly as Russian Federation Ministry of Defense Military Representative Office—where "Military Representative" in this context denotes "Quality Control."

This did not really give me much of a leg up on figuring out ОС, so I decided to look for search results that involved both ВП and ОС, whereupon I learn that—among some other abbreviations—the two abbreviations describe quality categories. Quality is the kind of subject that makes the usual Russian (German? European?) mania for standards look positively anemic, so in no time at all, I had tracked these quality categories to a government standard, only to find that
Articles of quality category ВП are those for which requirements set forth in design and process documentation for reliability and other operating properties, as well as for quality assurance and control, makes them suitable for equipment use on land, sea, and in the air. Failure of such articles entails significant consequences. Such articles are repaired and replaced at the level of assemblies and component elements.
—para. 5.3.1, GOST RV 20.39.411-97
A good, hard look confirmed that no pair of words started with the letters "Б" and "П," respectively (which is usually a dead giveaway that explains what the abbreviation means).

I feel I am so close to the answer I can taste it, but the client's deadline means I'll probably have to fall back and punt, with a transliteration.

Why am I continuing to work after finishing work for the day?

I'm going to shut down the computer before things get really out of hand. :)

Cheers...
