At least for this trip.

My having missed two days of posting this week is probably explained by a combination of lots of things getting done and fatigue. Natalie and I spent a couple of hours in the morning in the woods, looking for mushrooms. This was a brilliant idea on Natalie's part, and despite mid-July being a bit early for mushrooms (in my experience), we managed to find a number of lobster mushrooms (Hypomices lactiflorum, if memory serves), as well as a Boletus barrowsii (Natalie's find) and a bolete that started life quite a bit larger than when we found it (it had been nibbled, but the part that remained was surprisingly worm-free). Then we spent quite a bit of time yesterday afternoon addressing the "main mission", picking up the trailer and going through more of the stuff in the storage unit. We also met our tenants in person for the first time.

This morning, we went up to the house, picked through a small storage room that contained a bunch of stuff that probably should not have been left behind during our move to Houston in 2012, but there simply wasn't enough time to go through everything in detail, so besides retrieving a few items that are going to Houston with us, a couple of other things that I had hoped to recover during this trip will remain in Colorado. The lack of time and issues having to do with hitching and unhitching the trailer from the car caused me to call Feht and talk to Maria to cancel the evening's visit, which I felt bad about, but things are what they are.

After an afternoon nap, I spent some time rearranging items in the trailer, after which Feht called to ask what had conspired to prevent my planned visit. After explaining the situation, Shannon volunteered to lend me her car, and I took her up on her offer, so my visit was back on.

I spent most of the road out to Feht's following a pickup loaded with looked like two 250-gallon water tanks (folks out Feht's way either have wells or haul their water from town). What made this little caravan memorable was the fact that water was sloshing off the back of the truck's bed, and I'm pretty sure the level in one of the tanks dropped 6 inches or more between the time I got behind the truck and the time it turned off of Cat Creek Road.

Maria managed to put together a nice repast despite the short notice. I brought along the mushrooms that Natalie and I had found yesterday morning, and Maria performed her magic with them and a few potatoes.

The evening was magnificent. Lots of conversation, good food (reminder to self: must look up recipe for fish in aspic (zalivnaya ryba, no Cyrillic available on this computer, sorry), which I found to be excellent), and I look forward to our next gabfest.

It's too late to do anything constructive with the stuff in the trailer, so it will have to be done first thing tomorrow morning, before we leave for Houston.

Tomorrow's going to be a big day.

Cheers...
