I did not pay particularly close attention to the level of different color inks in my OfficeJet 6100 a couple of weeks ago, when I determined that the yellow cartridge had run out, but I seem to recall the level of the other colors (magenta and cyan) was about 10%–15%.

After replacing the yellow cartridge and waiting for the unit to wheeze and burp its way to an operable state, I sent a document to the printer and... nothing.

I checked the colors again, and now the magenta and cyan were out (and black was at ~15%).

This leads me to conclude that when the printer "clears" its jets, it spews a significant amount of ink through them to accomplish the task, because even if I'm wrong and there was only 5% left of the magenta and cyan when last I checked, that means the unit will go through one complete set of cartridges after 20 cleaning cycles without printing a single page!

And the ink is not cheap, either. Ye gods.

No work today, but I managed to get some other stuff done nonetheless. On the one hand, it wasn't as much as I had hoped, but it was more than I've been able to accomplish over the past few days.

Cheers...

On some HP printers, you can set them to ignore the out of ink signal, since that's often due to a faulty cartridge rather than being, you know, actually out of anything. At least that's so on my HP color laser.
