Natalie and I got on the road yesterday at daybreak and endured the hills of west Texas, as their sweeping undulations played merry havoc with our mileage. We had been getting about 30 mpg up to leaving Fort Stockton, but that number dropped by about 50%, which I found surprising.

Interstate 10 turned into mostly a stop-and-go parking lot east of San Antonio, and it was simply luck that caused us to seek gas at the point where we could take the intersecting highway (I forget the number) and head south and east, eventually arriving in Rosenberg, from where we took Interstate 59 north to Beltway 8 and home.

Today was one prodigious game of catch-up, in virtually all departments.

The highlight was a game of chess with Natalie. I won, but she made me work for it.

Cheers...

What does 'mpg' stand for?

mpg = miles per gallon

Folks hereabouts still hold out stubbornly in favor of the English system. :)

30 mpg is about 7.8 liters per 100 km.

I guessed the miles, but was not at all familiar with this way of counting fuel :-)

Out of curiosity, I have just calculated, very roughly, how much it would cost to drive from our house to our granny's one in Vladimir, about 250 km away, if the hypothetical car used the same 30 mpg as yours, and got 3 times the price of train tickets... which explains the various car share sites I've stumbled upon.

I think saying 'used' is not correct with miles pet gallon though. Do you use any words besides 'getting' with it?

(Sorry for the multiple comments :-) )

"Get" is, off the top of my head, the only (or at least the most prevalent) word used with mileage.

"How's the mileage on your Fiat?"

"I get about 39 miles per gallon." or
"It gets about 39 miles per gallon."

Cheers...
