That one-pager for my Albuquerque client is due tomorrow, so I sat down with the printout and used OpenOffice.org 1.0 to write the translation. I wasn't risking much... if for some reason the translation was lost owing to some kind of software problem or incompatibility, it wouldn't take long to redo the work.

As it turned out, there were a couple of things that I had to figure out in order to work with the word processor portion of the package, but in the end, I was able to complete the translation. Tomorrow morning, I'll fire up my Windows desktop and check to make sure the .doc version of the translation loads into Word. If it does, I think I will provide both the Word .doc file (as requested) and the OpenOffice .sxw file (just to let the client know I have such capability).

Provisionally, at least, today marks the beginning of an era for me where Word is no longer the only game in town.

BTW, I received another short job from client T in Chicago, due on Tuesday. That one, too, will likely be done using OpenOffice.

I wrote my last four papers, including my Seminar term paper in OpenOffice for Win32, and it's been more than adequate for my needs.
Only problems I've had is that the default font doesn't have the special characters that the equation editor plugin (which, sadly, is clunkier than the MS one) wants; this is, of course, easily remedied.
It's a nice package, and I hope it gets the attention it deserves.
