Tricky, the meridional thing as meridional can mean 'southern' (and you've already got that) *or* 'along, relating to or resembling a meridion'.
I wonder if you could say "a southern, meridional part that stretches for / extends..." as here the 'meridional' adds to the 'southern'.
Or how about just 'a southern part stretching north-south along the meridion... because it's *not* East-West, that part.

I think of LONGitude as being 'long', as opposed to LAT (FAT)itude, i.e. wide.

Another one is stalactites that 'cling tight', i.e. are suspended as opposed to stalagmites.

Oh, and rainbows. Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain. Think about it *g*.
