Tricky, the meridional thing as meridional can mean 'southern' (and you've already got that) *or* 'along, relating to or resembling a meridion'. I wonder if you could say "a southern, meridional part that stretches for / extends..." as here the 'meridional' adds to the 'southern'. Or how about just 'a southern part stretching north-south along the meridion... because it's *not* East-West, that part.
I think of LONGitude as being 'long', as opposed to LAT (FAT)itude, i.e. wide.
Another one is stalactites that 'cling tight', i.e. are suspended as opposed to stalagmites.
