Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
Most folks settle up with Uncle Sugar on April 15 every year. A fair percentage, though, take advantage of Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return), which must be filed by April 15 and extends the deadline for filing to August 15. Form 4868 does not take you off the hook for paying any income tax you may owe; the IRS expects you to enclose payment for expected taxes owed along with the 4868. But you get four additional months - with no questions asked - to organize your receipts, get your ducks in a row, and get right with the gummint.

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold, I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.
Come August 15, if you still need time, you can file Form 2688 (Application for Additional Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) that, when filed by August 15, gives you until October 15 to get your stuff together, move off the dime, and file your tax return. Unlike Form 4868, the rules for Form 2688 require you to explain why you need an extension, and your explanation must be adequate, according to the rules.

Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
This year, the drop-dead date for filing - if you've gotten your Form 2688 approved - is October 16. Tomorrow.

How do I know this?

Haha. ... Heh-heh. ... Hooo! ... Hahaha ... Oohhhhh! ... Heh-heh-heh-heh ... HAHAHAHAHA!!! ... HOO-HOO-HA-HEY! ... HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! ... YAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

(Need a hint?)

Cheers...
