One of Microsoft Word's less publicized features is its random "wake up the user" exercise, which this morning took the form of opening up last night's file with what appeared to be most of the content missing.

That's right. Upon opening the file, the indicator at the bottom of the screen showed the file to be 7 pages long (instead of over 200), and hitting Ctrl+Home brought me to the new "top" of the file, located in the middle of a word somewhere in what used to be not the top of the file.

I'm sure this will come as a surprise, but I said some very uncomplimentary things at that point.

Eventually, it turned out that most of the file was still there. It takes a while for the page count to "wake up." In the end, I'd "only" lost the first few pages of text. Fortunately, using Trados, the loss was easily recovered since all of the sentences in the lost section were in my translation memory database. That helped get my BP back down out of the stratosphere.

Most of the afternoon was spent chasing down sections that hadn't been touched by the client's translation memory database, and by about 6:30 pm, the job was finished. By that time, I'd gotten a call from another client with an urgent short assignment for tomorrow by 2 pm.

I've finished two of four pages of that assignment, and am thinking seriously of taking it easy for the "rest of the night."

Tomorrow, I've got to review and send the translation I worked on for most of the day, along with the shortie.

Cheers...
