The day has conspired to inculcate a deep, fiery-red, foul mood in me.

Between us girls, I'd been giving serious thought to letting go of Jody for the past couple of weeks. She's actually a pretty good worker, but only when she shows up, which is entirely too seldom. Then there are a few liberties that she takes with the computers in the store that bother me, though perhaps that's a quirk.

Today, she came in a bit past her appointed hour to announce she wasn't feeling well, thereby leaving me and Drew to fend for ourselves. That basically meant I could not work on anything else. Indeed, when I did finally go home at 1:30 pm, it was for only 40 minutes or so, as Drew called from the store asking for help processing packages. And in the final analysis, Jody's offer to call in a "couple of hours" to let us know if she was coming in later in the day simply put the frosting on the cake.

On the one hand, I feel bad about letting her go. On the other, I can't run a store that requires a staff of two when one of them has something like a 20% or better chance of not showing up on a given day. That kind of thing has an negative effect on my stress level and definitely affects my bottom line.

As a result, barring the 40-minute "break," I ended up staying for most of the day, which really puts me behind the eight-ball as far as the translation is concerned, since the client called and moved the deadline up by 24 hours. I probably should have told them to reassign the work, but the fact is, it didn't occur to me at the time. I need the work anyway, or at least that's what my fragile little ego tells me.

The work has also been redefined. Instead of the last 28 pages, they want the first 25 pages, which makes no sense, as there is no natural demarcation at that page (e.g., end of section or something similar). Scroom. If I have to end this translation in the middle of a sentence, I will. Fortunately, the call came before I started translating the last part of the document.

If I divide the work to be done evenly, it's a mere 3100 words per night. I'm not sure I'll be able to slog my way through that volume, but the nature of the document is such that its translation might go quickly (I seem to recall that an equation numbered 76 starts at the top of page 26). I won't know until I get through it.

Cheers...
