A clean plate...
Jul. 7th, 2004 08:23 pmNot only did I finish the second document on my plate, but I managed to polish off a (short) Excel file that arrived unexpectedly late this morning. The bottom line is that I haven't forgotten how to translate, which I'm sure is good news for everyone, especially people to whom I owe money.
In the odd moments between verbs, I kept trying to get mysql to work on onegin. I had installed the new 4.0 binary the other day and followed the installation instructions, but nothing I could do would (a) prevent PHP from looking in the wrong place for the mysql.sock file, and (b) allow mysql to find its basic databases.
I eventually solved the first problem by creating a symbolic link from where mysql.sock was expected to be to where it actually was, and chanced upon the solution to the second problem by accident, when I noticed that I'd mistyped a command during the installation (I'd typed chown instead of chgrp... yes, I know... big difference).
The reason for this self-inflicted pain was a desire to install WordPress on onegin and see just how massive a mysql file my LJ postings make when imported into WordPress. I didn't get far, for reasons I am still trying to understand. My earlier experiment with my June 2000 posts was... misleading, since none of those three posts contains any embedded HTML.
It's time to take a rest.
Cheers...
