Daughter Natalie is still in Houston. She reports the car is not fit for long-distance driving, which is unfortunate, although automobile is not the ideal mode of transportation out of Houston right now. She reports a friend had called from the road this morning, where he had progressed all of 24 miles since leaving town at 2:30 am.

The revised track now shows Rita headed pretty much directly for Houston.

I am running out of fingernails.

Cheers...

Ouch! Nothing like having to sit on your hands and sweat it out--and knowing that even if you could get there, there's damn little you could do. My mother has finally touched base with the last of our family on the Gulf she lost track of after Katrina--they've had no power and no phone, but felt their troubles were minimal, all told. Here's hoping you'll all be able to say the same, or better.

MSNBC on-line has this map (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9429714/) of evacuation areas, if that's any help seeing where you stand. Per the latest from [livejournal.com profile] goes_sat, there's a greater eastward trend than had been expected. If that continues, the Houston area may be spared the blow from the northeast quadrant of the storm, which (they say) is always the worst part. Even with that blessing it will still be pretty dreadful--and another mess it will take forever to clean up.

If you find that you've run out of fingernails to gnaw and are working on your knuckles, it's time to go for a walk.
