Canceling my merchant account for a long-defunct web site didn't happen when I thought it did, resulting in my having to pay an uncomfortably high minimum monthly fee for longer than I care to admit. Today, I finally got around to faxing an official cancellation to Cardservice International, and wouldn't you know it: they plan on charging me a $75 "account cancellation fee."
In the end, of course, it's less expensive for me to pay their farblegargling fee than to continue the account, but between the money they make every time one of us whips out their plastic when shopping and those little "extras" that they collect from merchants (such as the $12.95 per month we pay at the store for "customer service"), these guys make out like bandits.
Cheers...
