One of the nasty things about most blogs and wikis out there is the fact that they are under continuous and concerted attack by people who feel that any site allowing public access is fair game for unsolicited advertising, and there are few things likely to diminish the professional impact of a site than to have the droppings of various and sundry script ninnies, advertising mostly drugs and sex, on display for public view.

There is nothing to be done about them, just as there is nothing that can be done about junk faxes, unless you happen to have a particularly stubborn streak, which I simply do not have.

So, when I ran across a wiki hosting site (stikipad.com) with a reasonable set of features, as well as the ability to map an existing domain or subdomain to its servers, my interest was piqued.

So, today, after finishing my detailed go-through of a painfully detailed review of a job Feht and I are doing for a company back East (and who, based on their comments, undoubtedly would classify desktop publishing as an editing function), and after finishing the last of four short documents for yet another East coast client, I turned to the task of making the mapping work.

Indeed, one of the things that's always bothered me about wiki installations is that they tend to be designed so that their default behavior is to assume they own the site. In other words, in order to be able to jump into and out of a wiki hosted at one and the same site, you've got to get very friendly with the code so that you can modify it to show a certain set of links. Combine that with having to fiddle with the CSS codes to make the thing look different from the other umpteed gazillion installations out there of the same wiki, and frankly, me be out of mine depth, technically.

In attempting to integrate with the Stikipad site, I got the basic idea down pretty quickly, and most of the remaining time was spent trying to give the site a face-lift. The result (still in test mode), I think, looks better, but now approaches the kind of minimalism suggested by a blank sheet of paper.

I got up this morning thinking that it was Friday. I popped my head in Galina's room to find out if she wanted to go to the ham breakfast with me. She looked at me in a strange way and reminded me that today was Wednesday.

I went off to make the morning coffee, and thought to myself, "I'll concede it's not Friday, but it's not Wednesday, either!"

When I brought the coffee to Galina in bed, she took the cup and said, "You know, it's actually Thursday."

I said, "Yeah, the thought occurred to me. But you know what? Between the two of us, we're right on the money!"

More work has arrived.

Cheers...
