Unlike many machines with ancient CPUs and operating systems, my VAIO - equipped with Microsoft Me - appears not only unable to be connected to a network while the machine is "hot," but greets any such attempt by committing cyberseppuku.

The machine proceeds to freeze, and attempts to reboot lead directly to a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), which in turn cause "Safe Mode," etc. I feel a "reinstall" coming on...

Ye gods.

Then again, I should look on the bright side. Almost a week without a reinstall of Windows!

Cheers...

I am sitting here with my new Ti G4 p\Powerbook. The only resets I have had have come from trying to copy Microsoft software from one system to another without the use of a reinstall. Everything, and I mean everything else (some 50 aps) has moved over and worked properly.

Do you suppose that there is a connection here somewhere betweenyour Windows Me problems and my Microsoft(head) software problems. Maybe its a conspiracy. :) I hate that company.

I've had that happen, too. Generally, it's the result of the software installation process placing files into places where they get "lost" (e.g., copying DLLs to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory) and making extensive use of the Windows Registry as a substitute for the old-fashioned .INI files.

Part of it, I am convinced, is driven by the desire to combat piracy. On the other hand, about the only files that need to be backed up nowadays are data and configuration files.

Cheers...

Yeah. I agree. But who wants to go thru three or four sets of disks to load the latest version on a new computer because you can't copy the thing over. Fortunately, the Microsoft installer is dumb. If it sees anything it recognizeds, it will load.

My friend with the Vaio hasn't had any problems yet. On the other hand, he doesn't have a network. On the third hand, he does have AOL 6.0 installed, so I'm just waiting for the ax to fall.

Hypotheses galore...

It didn't come to a reinstall, as it turns out.

I merely deleted the McAfee software in preparation for a reinstall, and (for some reason) decided to reboot one more time before doing the reinstall (does it show that I once was a software engineer?).

Bingo! The problem went away.

(That's the BSOD, not the inability to do a "hot" network connection. Now I know better.)

Cheers...
