I sort of slacked off after my previous post, preferring to watch some television and go for a drive to sitting at my computer.

I did pause to go check out the Archive around these parts, just to see what I was doing - besides translating - on September 12, 2004, which is when I translated several pieces of text that, mirabile dictu, repeat in today's translation (some phrases verbatim; others similar enough to require only minor edits).

Translation memory comes through again!

I'm below the magic 1000-word mark in the current job, though as I noted in my previous post, there are a load of figures in the text, and most seem to have several small text boxes embedded. With any luck, I ought to be able to send off the job by the end of the day tomorrow without breaking a sweat, whereupon packing must commence at highest possible effectiveness.

Galina says there's not really much left to pack (if you don't count my junk).

Everyone's a comedian, these days, y'know?

My Spanish was, uh, enriched today by the phrase "Por qué no te callas?" According to an AFP story, among other remarks at an Ibero-American summit, Hugo Chavez of Venezula called former Spanish prime minister Aznar a "fascist." This
prompted current Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, a Socialist, to call on Chavez to show more "respect."

But Chavez forged on, and on Saturday he repeated the contentious word in relation to Aznar, adding: "A fascist isn't human, a snake is more human than a fascist."
A clearly irate King Juan Carlos then stepped in, saying to Chavez: "Por qué no te callas?"

I am told this phrase means "Why don't you shut up?"

Later, the story reports, Chavez engaged Juan Carlos indirectly, with his typical witty repartee, i.e., "what did you know about the failed coup against me and when did you know it?"

According to the story, the response back home in Spain has been pretty positive, and of course, there's clips up on YouTube, too (and one embedded clip in one day is more than enough).

Cheers...
