A long time ago, before computers entered my daily life, I ran across an article that described a rather convoluted formula, developed by one Rudolf Flesch, for quantitatively assessing the "readability" of text. I found the concept fascinating, although actually calculating such an index was a job and a half, since there was a lot of grunt work to do. Now, all you have to do is follow a link!

FYI, the HTML generated by the site that offers this, um, "blog readability test" includes a one-line text ad, which I've removed as there was no admonition to keep it.
