A day 'most like any other...
Dec. 12th, 2007 09:52 pmI found it hard to get a fire lit today, but that was okay. The item due tomorrow is finished (standard kvetching applies), and I will risk putting off any further effort on the item until tomorrow morning.
I managed to put together the house Cuisinart "food processor" (what a truly brain-damaged name for a piece of kitchen equipment) and proceeded to slice cabbage yesterday into bits suitable for home-made sauerkraut, which I started yesterday. The container for the kraut is an antique ceramic jar that I've lined with plastic wrap; one of the smaller plates from the kitchen fits inside very well, thereby promoting the submergence of the cabbage.
While on the subject of food, hopefully, I'll be able to start a batch of kombucha soon, as I'm getting a bit tired of shelling out about $3 a bottle for the stuff. In related news, I've really fallen in love with Greek yogurt, but must make sure to buy the nonfat version in the future (the non-nonfat version I bought at the Whole Foods Market weighed in with something like 55% of one's saturated fat quota for the day).
As it appears that this is turning into a food post, I should probably mention that, generally speaking, slow cookers are one's friend. However, forgetting to embed lots of garlic and/or spices in a piece of beef that one cooks in this manner seems to me to be a sure recipe for insipid leftovers. On an adjunct note, cooking minestrone without some kind of meat (or meat broth) in the mix just doesn't taste like minestrone, to me.
Natalie will be here in 10 days (yay!). Galina should be back even sooner (yay! yay!), though it would be nice if we could arrange for her to avoid the icy nastiness currently making its way across the country, seeing as she is driving.
In any event, it will be nice to have them here, as Shiloh is a rotten conversationalist.
Cheers...
